Each year, the process of welcoming returning Hoyas to campus and managing the transitions at start and end of each semester require extra work by all residents to ensure the security and maintenance of our on campus residential buildings.

2024 Fall Semester Opening
We are excited to welcome you back to Georgetown for fall 2024.
Georgetown Move-In for returning students: Sunday, August 25, 2024, starting at 9 AM ET.
Move-in is a coordinated process to ensure your arrival to Georgetown is as smooth as possible. Be sure to follow all the guidelines to ensure your move-in and those of your fellow Hoyas goes well.
PREPARING YOUR ITEMS
Make sure that every box, package, and piece of luggage is labeled with your: Name, Building & Room Number, and Cell phone. This ensures that any misplaced items can find their way to your room.
Each student is permitted only one vehicle to campus for move-in.
Avoid traveling in oversize vehicles or using roof racks as these vehicles cannot park in our on campus parking garages and will complicate your move-in process.
Move-in day is an important experience that should be memorable and stress-free. Save yourself time and headaches by shipping items to our partners Storage Scholars , over the summer. They will receive your packages, notify you, and deliver everything to your room before you arrive on campus, so you don’t have to lift a finger!
ARRIVING TO CAMPUS & YOUR BUILDING
Official move-in for returning students is from 9 AM-5 PM on August 25, 2024. Returning students can move in after this date/time but there will be limited move-in cart availability.
Ryan & Hawkins, Kennedy, McCarthy, Reynolds, Village C East, Village C West, & Village A
Your vehicle will enter campus via the Canal Road Entrance and proceed to park in the Southwest Quad parking garage. Once your vehicle parks, the student and guest will exit the vehicle and proceed to the Southwest Quad courtyard. Students in need of a move-in cart, can check out a move-in cart at the cart rental table
Arrupe & GU Hotel
Your vehicle will enter campus via the Canal Road Entrance and proceed to travel through campus past the multisport field and north to the Leavey Center parking garage. Once your vehicle parks, the student and guest will exit the vehicle and proceed to the move-in cart check out located near the east entrance of the Leavey Center parking garage. Students in need of a move-in cart, can check out a cart at the cart rental table.
LXR, Nevils, Alumni Square & University Townhouses
Your vehicle can park in the Georgetown neighborhood outside the student’s on campus building. Once your vehicle parks, the student and guest will exit the vehicle and proceed to the Alumni Square courtyard. Students in need of a move-in cart, can check out a move-in cart at the cart rental table.
Move-in cart rental locations are located at: Alumni Square courtyard, Southwest Quad courtyard, and East entrance of Leavey Center parking garage. Move-in carts are available for check out between 9 AM-5 PM.
MOVING IN
Students will check-in to receive their room key. The student will proceed to meet their guest(s). Students can proceed to push your items into their building and your room. After the move-in carts are unloaded into your room, return the empty cart back to the check in station.
ARRIVING IN A TAXI OR RIDESHARE?
Have the taxi or rideshare vehicle enter through the entrance at Canal Road and north to your on campus building. Rideshare vehicles and taxis can proceed onto campus to quickly unload outside the building but cannot park for extended periods of time.
2024 Fall Semester Closing
Residence halls and apartments, with the exceptions of University townhouses, close for the winter break period between the fall and spring semesters.
- All residents must vacate 24 hours after their last final OR by 10am on Sunday, December 22, 2024.
- Residents who do not vacate by the deadline are subject to a $100.00 Late Check-out Fee. The fee will be assessed to the resident’s Student Account.
Before You Leave – Closing Checklist
- Inspections will occur before and/or during winter break. Fees for any damages observed will be will be assessed to your Student Account.
- Clean your refrigerator & dispose of all perishable food. Unplug your personal mini/micro-fridges. Do not unplug University-provided full size refrigerators in apartments & townhouses.
- Pack all necessary items you will need during break considering that you will not be permitted to return to your space until spring opening. A limited number of moving carts will be available at Harbin Key Room.
- Close and secure all windows and doors. Windows left open may cause pipes to freeze and burst, causing water damage.
- Turn heating units in your room/apartment to “medium,” or 60 degrees. Do not turn off heat.
- Any Residential Living furniture (i.e. lounge furniture) found in student rooms during inspections will result in disciplinary sanctions.
- Take out all trash to designated trash areas to avoid the spread of pests. Exterminators will be spraying most rooms, apartments, and townhouses over the break.
Staying in the same space for Spring
If you are returning to your same room/apartment in Spring 2025, you do not return your room key. Remember to take all essential items (medicines, passports, etc.) with you when you leave. Residents who do not vacate by the deadline are subject to a $100.00 Late Check-out Fee. The fee will be assessed to the resident’s Student Account. No one will be allowed access to their rooms until re-opening at 10am on Monday, January 6, 2025.
Not Returning / Switching Rooms
- If you are not returning to campus for Spring 2025 (graduating, taking a leave of absence, transferring or withdrawing) you must submit a Housing Drop Form in Residential Living (Harbin 100, Monday-Friday, 9 am-5 pm).
- All personal belongings must be removed and the space should be cleaned.
- Items left behind will be boxed by Residential Living at a rate of $100 per box. Boxing fees will be assessed to the resident’s Student Account.
- Return key, if in non-SwitchTech room, to Harbin 104 Key Room by 10 AM Sunday, December 22, 2024. Fill out the Key Return envelope, and retain the yellow top part as your receipt. Drop the envelope in the box located outside of the Key Room. Unreturned keys are subject to a $200 fee via Student Accounts.
- If you submitted a room change request for Spring 2025, your spring assignments will be available in early December 2024 through Hoya Housing. Be aware you are not able to decline the room offered.
- Students who are changing to a new spring assignment must have all personal items cleared from the bed, desk, dresser and closet—and packed—before you vacate for Winter Break.
2025 Spring Semester Opening
Residence halls and apartments reopen at 10 AM on Monday, January 6, 2025. If you are a new student for spring semester (new student, returning from Study Abroad or Leave of Absence), please review the Housing Handbook for further details about spring housing.
Move in carts are not available to be reserved in advance, but can be checked out from the Harbin 104 Key Room for use.
Parking is not permitted near residential facilities during weekdays. Vehicles may be ticketed by the Office of Transportation Management. Vehicles should plan to park in the Southwest Garage. On weekend days, parking may be permitted near the residential facilities depending on what is occurring on campus. Vehicles should plan to park in a campus garage. If parked on the roads surrounding the buildings, someone should plan to remain with the vehicle who can move the vehicle if required.
2025 Spring Semester Closing
- Non-graduating students: Must vacate 24 hours after their last exam or no later than 10:00 AM on Sunday, May 11, 2025.
- Graduating seniors: Move out no later than 10:00 AM on Monday, May 19, 2025.
Important Dates
Students who do not comply with deadlines & policies regarding vacating on campus housing housing assignments are subject to financial penalties and fees. Abandoned belongings are removed from the on campus housing space and students assume full responsibility for any losses.
Prior to move-out, students are responsible for the following:
- Remove all personal belongings from your residence. Items left in rooms after closing will be donated or disposed of. The University assumes no liability for items left behind. All University furniture must be present, fully assembled, and in good condition, in order to avoid damage charges.
- Clean your residence, removing all personal belongings.
- Special cleaning charges begin at $150 for rooms and $340 for apartments & townhouses.
- If you have a balcony, patio or backyard, you are also responsible for cleaning that space. Do not leave University furniture outdoors.
- Remove tape, nails, tacks, posters, photos, and message boards from your walls and doors.
- Please dispose of trash and recyclables properly.
- Do not leave rugs, mini-fridges, or other personal belongings on the floor or in the lobby. The entire community will be fined for improper trash disposal.
- Remove bikes from University bike racks. Bikes left behind will be impounded and donated.
- Bunked beds
- In a room where beds must be bunked, leave them as is.
- Bunking is optional for most residents of Darnall, Copley, New South, Harbin, McCarthy, Kennedy, Reynolds, LXR, and Village C. In these cases, residents must unbunk their beds and leave the pegs on one of the beds.
- Please remember to lock doors and close windows when you leave to avoid damage/theft to your room, apartment, or townhouse after your departure. If you neglect to lock your doors and windows, you are responsible if damages are found or any furniture is missing during inspection.
Failure to complete these required tasks may result in charges being assessed to your student account.
Returning Your Key
Students must return their room key to the Harbin 104 Key Room, upon moving out. Failure to return the key will result in a $200 charge. If you return a key other than the one issued to you by Residential Living you will be assessed up to a $200 charge. You can verify your accurate key code by calling (202) 687-4593 or visiting by the Harbin 104 Key Room which is open Monday – Sunday between 8 am – 10 pm.

If a key is not postmarked and/or returned by May 19, 2025, you are charged $200 for a lost key. If you take the key home with you, you can mail it to the Office of Residential Living (include your Name, Room, & NetID) with a postmark by May 19, 2025 in a padded envelope. Be sure to tape the key to piece of cardboard/cardstock to ensure the package is not damaged during transit. Residential Living is not liable for envelopes received with no key inside due to poor packaging.

To appeal a lost key charge, you must produce the receipt you filled out when you returned the key. The last day to appeal this charge is June 15, 2025. Send appeals residentialkeys@georgetown.edu with your name, NetID, room assignment, and a copy of your key receipt.
Room/Apartment/Townhouse Inspections
A member of the Residential Living team executes a final inspection of your space after all residents have left.
Once inspections are completed, all final damage/cleaning charges are deducted from your housing deposit and/or your student account.
- A $200/item trash removal fee is assessed to each individual in the unit for any items left behind.
Damage appeals are submitted through the Hoya Housing portal within thirty calendar (15) days of the charge’s posting date. An email will be sent to inform residents when the Damage Appeal Form is available.

Dumpsters are located at the following locations:
- Harbin: on sidewalk adjacent to the loading dock of the Davis Performing Arts Center
- Village A and Ryan & Hawkins: Outside Ryan & Hawkins Hall, off Library Walk
- Alumni Square & Townhouses: on N Street
- Copley: road between Copley & Healy Hall
- Village C & New South: at Village C loading dock
- LXR & Nevils: in Walsh Courtyard
- McCarthy, Kennedy and Reynolds: at the stop sign between Harbin/Village C
- Darnall: Back side by CAPS
- Leavey (former GU Hotel): Reiss Loading Dock/under Leavey Center bridge
Move Out Drive
The annual Move Out Drive is back in 2025. Donate your gently-used furniture, clothing, books, non-perishable food and other household goods at one of five on-campus collection sites between noon and 4 pm at seven sites across main campus:
- Darnall | Henle | Arrupe: Darnall Loading Dock — Located between Darnall Hall and St. Mary’s Hall
- LXR | Nevils | Alumni Square | Townhouses: N Street — Located on N St. between 36th and 37th Streets
- Kennedy | McCarthy | Reynolds | Kennedy Hall: Kennedy Hall — Located in front of Kennedy Hall on North Rd. across from Cooper Field
- Ryan & Hawkins | Village A | Copley | New South | Village C: Ryan & Hawkins Hall : Next to Ryan & Hawkins Hall on Library Walk across from Village A
The Move Out Drive addresses the environmental challenge of unwanted clothing, books, school supplies and household goods that Georgetown students discard each year as they move out of their school-year residences. Applying the university’s social justice mission to this challenge, Georgetown partners with various local charities to collect and donate these unwanted items, providing every-day basic household goods to meet real life needs of people experiencing housing insecurity.
Storage and Shipping
The Corp is excited to offer Summer Storage Services for May 2025 to students living on-campus and in the surrounding Georgetown community. The Corp is offering drop-off and pick-up options for those on-campus, and drop-off options for those in the surrounding neighborhoods. Check out The Corp website and FAQ for more details on pickup/dropoff locations, dates, and pricing.
A few words of caution. There may be other vendors who offer to mail or store your boxes. Make sure the vendors you use are legitimate, keep a receipt for all monies paid and all belongings turned over and maintain a contact name and phone number until you return for the fall semester.
USPS and UPS will accept parcel post packages weighing no more than 70 pounds. No carriers provide pick-up service at residential buildings.
Cart Reservations
A limited number of carts are available on a first-come, first-serve basis from the Harbin Key Room (open 8 AM-10 PM). Carts can be checked out for a maximum of a 2-hour period; a $200 fine will be issued for carts not returned or returned broken.
May Transition & Pre Session Housing
Only students who are part of a sponsored department or have both an on-campus spring and summer assignment qualify for May Transition Housing. Graduating seniors are sponsored by Residential Living. Visit the Transition Housing page for more information.
Parking
Georgetown University is a pedestrian-friendly campus. For the safety of pedestrians and motorists alike, vehicular traffic in the core of campus is limited to service, construction and emergency vehicles. It will not be possible for you to park near your student’s residence on the main campus. Parking locations are listed below and featured on this map.
Southwest Quad Garage (entry from Canal Road) is the primary guest parking area. This garage provides the best access to New South, Village C East & West, Harbin, Kennedy, McCarthy, and Reynolds. Free two-hour parking is available all day and evening. Let the attendant know that you on campus for move-out.
Leavey Garage (entry from Canal Road) provides the best access to Arrupe, Copley, Henle Village, Darnall, and the University Hotel. Free parking is available at designated spots on the P2 Level when entering the garage on the East side. Please consult the parking map linked above for the dates and times at which free parking is available. A Parking Attendant will be available at the entrance of the garage on most days to answer questions.
Lot 9 (entry from Prospect Street) provides the best access to Village A. Free two-hour parking is available. Spots are available Monday-Friday after 5:00 PM and all-day on weekends.
For students living in Alumni Square, Townhouses, Nevils, and LXR, legal street parking is available near those residences. These are city streets and not subject to the University’s jurisdiction.
Remember, it is not possible to park near your student’s on-campus residence. All drivers must obey posted signs and avoid parking in designated fire lanes and other reserved areas. Residential Living is not responsible for any ticketing or towing that may occur.
