Creating meaningful communities starts with creating spaces where students feel supported, connected, and empowered to grow. As a Summer Community Director, Bre approaches her work with a commitment to authenticity, advocacy, and helping students find their place within the Georgetown community. We sat down with Bre to learn more about what community means to her, what makes Georgetown special, and why she loves working with students during the summer.
What does building community mean to you as a Community Director?
“Building community to me means providing safe spaces for residents to learn who they are, what they need, and where they want to eventually end up as their journey progresses at Georgetown. Building community means being intentional with the programs and initiatives being offered based on the needs of the residents, but also providing spaces for students to connect with each other and have fun in the process.”
What makes Georgetown unique?
When asked what stands out most about Georgetown, Bre points to the strong sense of community that supports students throughout their college experience.
“I think the thing that stands out the most about Georgetown is the strong sense of community. Students [and guests] who live on campus with us are in living environments where they feel supported and connected, but also challenged to take themselves and their goals a step further.”
What values guide your approach to your work?
Authenticity and advocacy are the two values that shape how Bre supports students and builds community.
“The main values that guide the work that I do are authenticity and advocacy. Allowing students [and summer guests] to show up in spaces as their authentic selves, while also allowing myself to do the same, and helping them realize that they are adding to that space in some way is a big part of why I do the work that I do.”
She also finds fulfillment in helping students find their voice and advocate for themselves.
“Advocating for the needs of [residents], but also teaching them how to advocate for themselves, has been the most rewarding part of my time here at Georgetown.”
What makes being a Summer Community Director unique?
One of Bre’s favorite parts of the summer experience is the opportunity to work with Resident Assistants from across Georgetown and build new connections beyond her academic-year team.
“My favorite part about being a Summer CD is working with RAs who are not on my team during the academic year. It allows me to make new connections and become another resource to the RAs who show up each and every day, do the work, and do it well.”
For Bre, supporting student staff and helping them recognize their impact is one of the most rewarding aspects of the role.
“It is truly an honor to help RAs realize that the work they do on this campus for our residents truly does matter and has a lasting impact on the Georgetown experience.”
