Residence Hall Closures & Move-Out Deadlines
- All residence halls and apartments (except University townhouses) close for winter break between the fall and spring semesters.
- All residents must vacate within 24 hours of their last final or by 10 AM on Sunday, December 22, 2024 (whichever comes first).
- Late Check-Out Fee – Residents who do not vacate by the deadline will be charged a $100 late check-out fee, assessed to their Student Account.
Before You Leave – Closing Checklist
- Inspections & Damages – Inspections will occur before/during break, and any damage fees will be assessed to your Student Account.
- Refrigerator & Food
- Clean out your refrigerator and dispose of all perishable food.
- Unplug personal mini/micro-fridges. Do not unplug University-provided full-size refrigerators in apartments & townhouses.
- Pack Essentials – Bring anything you’ll need over the break, as you will not be permitted to return until spring opening. A limited number of moving carts will be available at Harbin Key Room.
- Secure Windows & Doors – Close and lock all windows and doors to prevent water damage from frozen pipes.
- Heating Settings – Set your heating unit to medium (60°F)—do not turn off the heat.
- Residential Living Furniture – Any lounge furniture found in student rooms will result in disciplinary sanctions.
- Trash & Pest Control – Take out all trash to designated areas. Exterminators will spray most rooms, apartments, and townhouses over break.
If You’re Staying in the Same Space for Spring
- Keep Your Room Key – If you are returning in Spring 2026, do not return your key.
- Take Essential Items – Remember to bring any important belongings (medications, passports, etc.).
- No Access Until Spring Opening – No re-entry will be allowed until 10 AM on Monday, January 6, 2025.
If You Are Not Returning or Switching Rooms
- Remove Personal Belongings – Your space must be completely cleared and cleaned.
- Leftover items will be boxed at $100 per box (charged to your Student Account).
- Return Your Key (if applicable)
- If you are not in a SwitchTech room, return your key to Harbin 104 Key Room by 10 AM on December 22, 2024.
- Fill out the Key Return Envelope, keep the yellow receipt, and drop the envelope in the designated box.
- Unreturned keys are subject to a $200 fee (charged to Student Accounts).
- Room Changes for Spring 2026
- Spring assignments will be available in early December 2024 via Hoya Housing.
- Room change requests are binding—you cannot decline your new assignment.
- If moving to a new assignment, pack and clear your bed, desk, dresser, and closet before leaving for Winter Break.
Following these guidelines will help ensure a smooth transition before and after Winter Break. Safe travels, and enjoy your break!
