Residential Academy FAQs

Can we break a group of 8 into 2 groups of 4?

MAYBE. Only if we have availability, and if the group agrees unanimously.

I applied to be an RA. Do I have to fill out both applications?

If you only want to be considered as an RA, just fill out the RA application. If you want to be considered as a resident as well, you have to do both.

Are all students interested in living in the Residential Academy required to complete a Residential Academy application?

Yes.  All students wishing to live in the Academy must complete an application.

If I currently live in the Academy, do I need to reapply for next year?

Yes.  All students wishing to return to the Residential Academy must complete an application.  Given the high demand for the program, returning to the Academy is not guaranteed.

If I am selected to return to the Academy, do I receive priority placement?

No.  Like last year, accepted groups will select their spaces based on the determined selection order.

Can new Academy applicants apply with returning candidates?

Yes.  Students may form their groups however they like.  New and returning applicants may apply together.

Can any student apply to live in the Residential Academy?

A: The Spirit of Georgetown Residential Academy is open to rising sophomores, juniors and seniors.  It is important to note, however, that apartment-style accommodations are primarily reserved for rising juniors and seniors.

Do I need to be part of a particular faith community or tradition to live in the Residential Academy?

A:  No.  All students, are welcome and encouraged to apply to the Spirit of Georgetown Residential Academy.  The Residential Academy is designed to offer a residential space for all students, from all backgrounds, traditions, and experiences, to come together, engage and celebrate the shared principles that make us all Hoyas.

Why call it a “Residential Academy?”

A: Modeled from “residential colleges” seen on campuses such as Stanford and Cornell, the Spirit of Georgetown Residential Academy seeks to form a close community of students who share a deep interest in the values and mission of Georgetown University.  The Academy will offer unique programming such as weekly reflections, dialogue series, special-guests, faculty mentors and much, much more.

What is the “Academy Cohort?”

To support and encourage community development and engagement beyond just the individual apartments and suites, students residing in the Residential Academy will be assigned to an “Academy Cohort” with other members of the building.  Led by Resident Assistants, cohorts will meet three times a semester for reflective conversations and social opportunities.

What is the “Interreligious Understanding” floor?

A portion of the top floor of the community, all semi-suites, will be dedicated to students interested in the Interreligious Understanding tenet of the Spirit of Georgetown.  Residents will have the unique opportunity to further engage around topics of interfaith and spiritual formation.

Will everyone in my group be selected to live in the community or is it based on individual applications?

If selected, all members of a group will receive the opportunity to live in the Academy.  Please note, all members of the group must complete an individual application.  The collective strength of the individual applications will determine whether or not a group is selected.

What happens if my group is selected to live in the Residential Academy?

If your group is selected, you will receive information regarding the room-selection event, scheduled to occur in March.

If my group is selected, are we guaranteed to live together?

A: In most cases, yes.  Groups are selected based on their interest and commitment to the program, not just on group-size.  Depending on your place in the selection process, and the remaining available space, some groups may need to break into smaller groups.

If selected, it is guaranteed that we’ll receive an apartment?

No.

What happens if a member of my group decides not to live in the Residential Academy after we’re selected?

A: If a student changes their assignment after selection, the remaining members of the group will have the opportunity to pull-in another student.  The new student, however, must complete a “Residential Academy Vacancy Filling Form” and be approved to join the Academy by the Advisory Council.

When will we know if we’ve been selected to join the Residential Academy?

Students will be notified by March 1st with their selection status.  Students who are not selected or decline an offer will have the opportunity to participate in the remaining Housing Selection processes
